Be Realistic (2)

be realistic Be Realistic (2)The projected cost: $12,000. So I did it all myself. It took two years. When I was finished and calculated the costs, including my time, I had a $22,264.50 bathroom that was very nice but certainly not worth the money.

In addition, the anecdotes surrounding that job, such as the Sunday night I put a nail through the hot-water line and found that the shutoff valve to the bathroom in the basement was rusted, and how the rat found its way into the house through the toilet drain that was open for several months, would fill another book.

When we decided to add a tub to the master bath of our present house, we hired a contractor. The job, which was as complicated as the third-floor bathroom project that I tackled, cost $14,000 but took only a few weeks. Every problem that arose was handled quickly.

The bottom line: Some jobs you can do, and some are better left to others. Be absolutely sure that you have the time, the ability, and the confidence to take on a renovation project and achieve a result that is both cost-effective and something you can be proud of.
